Mental Table by Labcomagic (Soren Harbo)

Review

Packaging: The Mental Table was not a cheap item so I guess my expectations were high. Even so they were greatly exceded when it arrived. It came very well packaged in it's own hard case with neatly cut out foam packing sections for each item. You receive everything necessary to operate the system and Soren includes international wall socket adaptors for most countries (UK, Europe, America). I'm from Australia and there wasn't an adaptor for our type of plug however I have an american plug power transformer so I am using this to plug in the recharger for the unit. When I first tested the unit, everything worked first time as expected with absolutely no hickups.

The Table: I could not imagine a higher quality of production here. This is exactly what I was hoping it would be. The appearance is a simple matt black table top with a woodgrain trim around the outside. There is absolutely no chance of discovery of anything even remotely suspicious. No switches, no funny looking bits or attachments. It is exactly what an ungimmicked small black table made for easy stage use and portability would look like.

The Legs and Stand: Black, heavy duty, very high strength and easy to assemble/disassemble. Rock solid stable and all packs neatly into the hard case. Excellent manufacturing! Really makes the table a practical reality for performance but completely uninteresting to the audience which is exactly what I wanted.

The functionality: This is a most superb system and will have a plethora of applications far too broad to consider in this brief review. I'm not going to go into great detail here suffice to say I have had 100% success rate with the functioning and love having the option of a visual or vibration 'reading'. The only way I have found the reading will not register is if you don't use an appropriate object according to the criteria in the instructions. The 3 modes open up a world of possibilities and different presentational approaches. See the website link above to find out what the modes are.

After the release of Black Table Top (I don't have this and haven't used one so I can't compare it), one aspect which particularly interested me is the effect where an item is selected but never actually touched. I was curious to know if this could be done with Mental Table and the answer is YES!!! In fact this will be one of the easiest no brainer effects possible allowing for full focus on the presentation. You do have to think a bit differently in the way you use the table for this effect. PM me if you want to discuss.

Rating:

Easily 10/10.

Absolutely everything I had hoped it would be and more. Excellent quality and a very useful mentalists toolkit. I say toolkit because the possiblities are so vast. You can also disconnect the method a long, long way from the effect if you think carefully about routining. I'm not sure how many others have this yet or are thinking about picking one up. Everyone no doubt has their own thoughts about using 'James Bond' style gadgets of mentalism. My feeling is this one is just so innocent and unsuspected that it really provides a brilliant, easy method to frame interesting presentations around.

"I have recently performed using the table at a winery on the Sunshine Coast for a Halloween dress up function and had a ball!  I used two applications.  One was a 'Dead Zoning' (Andy Nyman) type presentation.  The other is something I came up with, a 3 coin intuition routine where the last phase is a 'no touch', just think of a coin type ending.  I was most pleased with how they played and the reliability of the table."
